Texas Entrepreneurs Build A Business While Traveling The World

A pair of globe-trotting newlyweds in Arlington Texas are out to prove that you don’t need an office – or even a home address – to run a successful business.

Rachel and Steven Marker sold everything they owned – including their renovated suburban home – last month in order to travel the world. Steven is also taking a leave of absence from his 12-year career in pharmacy.

Now, the couple plans to work as house sitters, scuba diving professionals and business consultants while exploring different countries. And along the way, they hope to show others that this type of lifestyle isn’t beyond their reach.

“We both built up successful careers, but we just couldn’t stop thinking about what it would be like to spend our lives traveling,” said Rachel, a business consultant. “Eventually, we decided to just go for it.”

“We needed to break out of our suburban routine and wanted to do something that we were really passionate about,” said Steve.

The couple also hopes to show others that it’s possible to live a life of travel, even if you don’t fit the stereotype of a twenty-something backpacker. They’ll be sharing their experiences on the website www.travelingmilemarkers.com

Steve and Rachel begin their journey in Portugal on Feb.4. They admit leaving their comfortable lifestyle will bring challenges, such as financial instability.

For accommodations, the couple will be providing house sitting services in the countries they’re visiting. To support themselves financially, they’ve developed a unique business strategy that blends scuba diving and business consulting services.

They’re both experienced divers: Steve is a NAUI DiveMaster while Rachel is a Naui Dive Master In Training. The couple plans to assist diving schools during their travels by providing support and filling in for dive shop owners while they are on holidays.

Despite having a doctorate in pharmacy, Steve said he didn’t feel fulfilled in his career. For the time being, he plans to put his energy into a new occupation focused around diving.

Rachel will be taking her new business consulting company – Emraes Consulting – on the road with her. That means her clients in Texas could be chatting with her in Ireland one week and Thailand the next.

“They’re thrilled to be coming along for the ride,” said Rachel, who has spent 20 years working in the architecture engineering and construction industries.
