Texas Entrepreneurs Build A Business While Traveling The World – 2014
A pair of globe-trotting Texans are out to prove that you don’t need an office – or even a home address – to run a successful business.
Rachel and Steven Marker sold everything they owned in 2013 in order to travel the world and work on growing a business. Steven has also taken a leave of absence from his 12-year career in pharmacy.
Now, the couple focuses on diversifying their consulting firm EMRAES, while exploring different countries. And along the way, they hope to show others that this type of lifestyle isn’t beyond their reach.
“We both built up successful careers, but we just couldn’t stop thinking about what it would be like to spend our lives traveling AND working at the same time,” said Rachel, Managing Partner of EMRAES. “Eventually, we decided to just go for it.”
“We needed to break out of our suburban routine and wanted to do something that we were really passionate about,” said Steve.
The couple also hopes to show others that it is possible to live a life of travel and to grow a business, even if you don’t fit the stereotype of a twenty-something backpacker. They’ll be sharing their experiences on the website www.travelingmilemarkers.com
Steve and Rachel began their journey in Portugal on Feb.4, 2014 They admit leaving their comfortable lifestyle was initially a challenge especially the financial instability, now it is just our chosen lifestyle and would change anything about it.
For accommodations, the couple provides house sitting services in countries around the world. To support themselves financially, they’ve developed a unique business strategy that blends business consulting services with travel coaching services, and if needed, they can run a scuba shop while the owner takes their vacation.
What does that mean?
They’re both experienced divers: Steve is a NAUI DiveMaster while Rachel is a NAUI Dive Master In Training.
Despite having a doctorate in pharmacy, Steve said he didn’t feel fulfilled in his career. For the time being, he plans to put his energy into a new occupation focused around blogging, writing a new book, and living life.
Rachel will be expanding her business consulting firm – EMRAES – on the road with her. That means her clients in Texas could be chatting with her in Ireland one week and Thailand the next.
“They’re thrilled to be coming along for the ride,” said Rachel, who has spent 20 years working in the architecture engineering and construction industries.
